Stainless Steel Cabinets at Home Depot: A Cost-Effective Solution for Your Van Conversion

When it comes to building cabinets for your van conversion, many people opt for traditional wood materials. However, with the rising cost of decent plywood these days, it's worth considering alternative options that can provide a similar level of quality and functionality at a lower cost.

One such option is stainless steel cabinets from Home Depot. Not only are they durable and resistant to corrosion, but they also offer a sleek and modern look that can add a touch of sophistication to your van conversion.

In our experience, we found that building cabinets using stainless steel materials was a surprisingly cost-effective solution. Sure, there were some minor issues with squeaking doors due to the metal-on-metal contact, but these were easily resolved by applying sticky back velcro to the areas where the doors made contact.

One of the benefits of using stainless steel cabinets is their ability to withstand the rigors of travel. Unlike wooden cabinets, which can be prone to damage or dislodgment in an accident, our stainless steel cabinets are securely bolted into place and are unlikely to shift or fall during transit.

Our own van conversion features two stainless steel cabinets, each with its own unique design and functionality. The left cabinet contains two five-gallon plastic containers for fresh and gray water, as well as a cheap stainless sink and bar faucet. We also installed a Whale brand marine foot pump, which sits just to the left on the floor.

The right cabinet has a drawer that houses cutlery, small equipment, and odds and ends. There is still plenty of space for kitchen essentials such as a single burner butane stove, box with dishes, and more.
